The Peruvian Hairless Dog is an ancient breed, first developed in pre-Inca Peru. Its popularity grew during the Incan Dynasty. The breed is easily recognized by its nearly hairless body, sometimes with a few hairs on its head.

While once used as food by pre-Incans, the Incas saw them as mystical and banned their consumption. These dogs appear on Andean pottery and were believed to heal arthritis.
According to The New York Times, Peruvian Hairless Dogs live eleven to twelve years, weigh up to 26 pounds, and are affectionate, lively, and alert. In Peru, they are considered as important as Machu Picchu.
